USAID/PEP ICT in Education Week

From the 25th-29th of June, the USAID Primary Education Project organized a week of activities with regard to ICT in education. USAID/PEP presented new computer hardware and innovative ICT products for schools. During the week, workshops were organized with international consultants and representatives from INTEL Corporation, OpenLab International and Indiana University.

Low Cost Laptop

In the first session on the 25th June, INTEL Corporation showcased the “Classmate PC", which is a laptop specifically designed for education. Because laptops can be used in any classroom and do not need dedicated laboratories, they can easily be used across the entire curriculum. INTEL representatives also presented INTEL’s educational program.

Open Source Software (FLOSS)

During the FLOSS day, on 27th June, the international consultant Denis Brandjes, of OpenLab international, shared experiences from other countries as well as the advantages and benefits that FLOSS offers. OpenLab is a Linux distribution for education. It was developed by OpenLab international for the South African educational system, but now it is used in many countries in Africa and Europe. The last European country to use OpenLab was Germany. OpenLab International has also developed the EDUKAR educational package which is a compilation of over 120 educational applications divided in 9 main categories. All of the applications included in the EDUKAR are developed by teachers for use by teachers.

Integration of ICT in Math & Science

In the workshop on 28th and 29th June, Jeff Nowak of Indiana University will produced ICT products and innovative strategies used in US & European schools. Participants in the workshop identified which products are applicable in Macedonian schools and compatible with the Macedonian primary education system. An emphasis was given on showcasing different ICT products that can be used to enhance teaching and learning in Math and Science. USAID/PEP will select some of these products for introduction in selected schools in 2007/2008 school year.
