“We want more practical learning”, say students.
Students were given a taste of the kind of teaching and learning being promoted by USAID’s Primary Education Project whenconsultants from Indiana University worked with grade eight students in geography and chemistry during seminars and workshops for Phase 1 teachers held in December 2007 and January 2008. Grade 8 students from were thrilled by the practical activities and experiments presented and expressed the wish for more exercises like this in their regular classes.
246 mathematics and science teachers from 25 Phase 1 schools were trained in new teaching and learning practice, during the “improving math and science teaching and learning” seminars and workshops.
“All we are expecting from the teachers is, that they will implement the new teaching and learning practice which will be used as an example for other teachers” said Anica Aleksova, responsible for the PEP Math and Science component.
The workshops provided a high level of organization and good working conditions. Teachers worked together in subject specific groups, sharing ideas about applying their newly gained knowledge, The content included ICT sessions for teachers, promotion of the schools.edu.mk portal as well as training materials for five subjects (mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and geography).
Workshops and seminars are planned for the schools from Second phase, which will start in May 2008.
