USAID/PEP helps save the music school in Kavadarci! The city of Kavadarci is a seed-bed for music talent. The city has its own primary music school “Lazo Micev – Rale” and this is the only music school in this region of its kind. This school was founded in 1970 and since then hundreds of students have been educated there and subsequently contributed to Macedonian culture life. However, the music school was housed in a wooden bungalow with no heat and sound isolation. These conditions were inadequate for teaching music. But a bigger problem was about to come. Following denationalization, the court ordered the school to leave the bungalow by the end of 2007. They had to find a new facility in which the school will continue working, if not the school would be closed and more than 400 students would be left without proper music education. The school and the municipality managed to obtain a building from the Government which was used previously as a children’s dispensary. However it was in a very poor condition and needed to be completely renovated. At this point the school and the municipality approached USAID’s Primary Education Project (PEP) and the US Embassy in Skopje asking for support. US Embassy representatives visited the schools and they decided to provide music equipment to a total value of more than 6,000 Euros. PEP assessed the feasibility of the project and approved it for implementation. PEP donated 1.621.414 denars for the replacement of roof, floor and renovation of the façade of the new school building. This was a big incentive for the local self-government, for the business elite, the school board and the parent’s council. They, together, donated 2.906.850 denars for the replacement of the old windows and doors, toilets, sewage system, the old electrical installation and for buying new furniture. PEP was responsible for the coordination of the work. Today the musically talented children of Kavardarci have a beautiful new building where they can continue studying music and dreaming of becoming world-wide known music stars. The director of the school, Zlatko Jovanov, said to the PEP representatives, “We will remember you for the rest of our lives because if you were not here to provide overall coordination of the project activities, this school would have been closed by now. With the implementation of this project we really understand the word: ‘team-work’.
