Floor to roof renovation in the school in Krilatica
Koco Racin is a primary school, located in Municipality of Kratovo, which is divid
ed into one central and six satellite schools. Out of all the satellite schools, the one in
v. Krilatica has the largest number of students. As one of the local villagers said, “Young people are
continually leaving the villages, trying to find their luck and earn their piece of bread in the big cities”, yet, against all odds, this school continues to exist and serve the community. Being in operation ever since 1950, it has seen several generations of students finish their primary education within its walls.
Due to numerous reasons, the municipal government of Kratovo together with the school in Krilatica made a decision to apply for a project within the renovations component of USAID’s Primary Education
Project. As well as poor aesthetics, the two school buildings were in a condition that seriously disrupted the learning environment.
The leaking roof, old electric wiring, the damaged windows and the broken doors, that had to be supported by a log in order to stay closed, all led to heat loss and high maintenance costs, but even more importantly, a serious risk to students’ health and security. According to the school’s estimation, around 30% of the he
at was escaping the school buildings due to poor insulation. Maintaining the hygiene in the classrooms was also a challenge, since the old wooden floor was very hard to clean.
Fortunately, thanks to the commitment of the school staff, the municipality, and PEP’s renovation team, the school managed to transform the school within just one month from the start of this project. The joint effort resulted in new alumi
num windows and doors, reconstruction of the ceiling and roof, new electrical installation and reparation and painting of the interior walls and floor.
Rada Zafirova, Principal of Primary School Koco Racin, commented on the project’s success: “The students will be very happy when they come back to school in September and find their school in a condition that satisfies modern criteria and can be compared to schools in big cities. The education process will run smoothly now “. Among other things, she was very satisfied with the new electric installation, “We now finally have appropriate conditions for use of computers”.
