USAID PEP starts renovating its 100th school
The Renovation component of USAID’s Primary Education Project had a goal of renovating 100 primary schools in Macedonia before the end of the project, in 2011. One year ahead of schedule, after 4 years of successful projects, thanks to the dedication of the PEP team, municipalities and schools, workers have already started working at Primary School “Vanco Srbakov”, in v. Vranestica, which will be PEP’s 100th renovated school.
“Vanco Srbakov” is a satellite school that offers primary education to 30 local students. Having had no renovations and investments ever since the school was built in 1920, time has taken its toll over the building, making the physical conditions a serious challenge for the education process. The president of the Parent-Teacher Association commented that he has two children attending this school and he is worried about their safety every single day he sends them to school.
We believe that he, as well as all students, parents and teachers, will be very happy when they are greeted in September by a totally renovated school. By then, the school will have a new roof, floor, windows and doors, electrical installation, and reparation and painting of the interior walls, ceilings and facade. “The people in the village did not believe that anyone would really want to invest in this school. You can only imagine their surprise when they actually saw the workers dismantling the roof and starting the renovation. After having so many children leave the school in order to study in bigger cities, we are now convinced that the renovated school will attract the children back to the village and increase the number of students in the school”, said a representative from the municipality.
