Water costs for primary school ‘Blaze Koneski’ – Prilep reduced by amazing ten times!
For healthy development of our students, other than good classroom and indoor working conditions, adequate outdoor surroundings are also necessary. Students should feel pleasant at their classroom desks, but also in their immediate outdoor setting – the school yard. Provided these elements are managed well, appropriate use of natural resources can help achieve significant results.
PEP has been collaborating with primary school ‘Blaze Koneski’ from Prilep for a few years now. This school, among other things, is involved in successful activities under the PEP ‘Green Schools’ initiative.
With an aim to beautify and improve the green surfaces in the school yard, the principal of the school, Marija Duleska, began a revamping initiative of the same, with selfless help from the school’s teachers and pupils.
“A few years ago, it was a neglected area that did not serve a purpose. This is why we decided, with combined effort and resources, to transform it into a park” – principal Duleska said.
Due to the high water supply costs for watering the grass surface in the park, the school decided to use natural springs. During the summer, a well was dug out in the yard, while pupils – members of the school’s ‘Green Club’, prepared a plan for reducing their water consumption by using water from the well for the school’s sanitary requirements. PEP gladly supported this initiative by acquiring a water pump, pipes and other sanitation equipment. The pump was fitted in June this year, and since the beginning of the school year, the school has felt strong effects from the reduced water consumption and savings. The well has capacity to service around 1000 pupils in the school and maintain the grass surfaces in the school yard’s park.
“This is the third month that we enjoy the savings from the investment made towards a water pump in the school yard. Earlier, monthly water bills for the school reached up to 60,000.00 denars. This month, the water bill was only 5,000.00 denars, since all our other water needs are satisfied with water from the well. Imagine, the investment repaid itself in only three months” – said the principal, extremely satisfied with the situation.
The school is organizing a large number of other eco-activities, such as: planting trees, cleaning the nearby lake, as well as an initiative for riding bicycles to raise awareness for the natural environment.
Teachers and pupils from this school are actively working on protecting and improving the natural environment. At the same time, the awareness and education of the pupils at primary school ‘Blaze Koneski’ in terms of ecology and energy efficiency are at a high level.
During our meeting, technical education teacher Petar Andonoski said:
“The countries, that in the future can secure access to water, will be rich and positive living environments.”
Let’s work towards this goal.
