Teachers use video for professional development
A group of twenty teachers, enthusiasts and leaders in their field of expertise, got together earlier this
year to start a new level of peer-supported professional development. A mixed group of, lower and upper grade teachers, teaching in both Macedonian and Albanian, discussed good teaching practice is and how to share it with other colleagues through a video.
PEP provided Flip cameras and training on their use and use of editing software.
One of the participants, Anita Nikolovska, a teacher from Primary School Toli Zordumis , Rzanovce, said: “The goal of the videos is to break the stereotypical lecture and to really create 21st century classes and instruction... To show examples of really good practice.”
During April and May they prepared for filming, using a lesson plan and a storyboard tool. This helped
them focus on the message they wanted to send through the video. A colleague from each school helped with the filming of the class. Teachers used the internet to explore how teachers in other countries use video in professional development.
Fatime Alii, a teacher from Primary School Zivko Brajkovski, Skopje, said: “After the workshop I watched videos on Teachers TV (from UK) every day…that was my ritual for starting the day…and I got many ideas for my classes”.
In June, the teachers met together again to share their videos and give useful feedback to improve their work. The value of exchanging videos among colleagues is seen by Zaklina Ristovska, lower grades teacher from Primary School Zivko Brajkovski, Skopje: “Usually, when we see someone’s idea, we, teachers, get 100 ideas which are similar or completely different… and that is how the whole education process advances.”
