Green Schools create positive changes in environment protection

As a result of the great success and the increased interest for the pilot phase of the PEP Green School activity, it was decided to expand it and to include 15 new schools. They have already established Green Clubs with an average number of 25 members, who will be focused on four relevant environmental themes: energy efficiency, water conservation, waste management, and transportation.

The activities that the students of the Green Clubs conduct, such as: surveys, interviews, record keeping, project work and group work, are new and very interesting for the students. While doing them, they are learning the importance of saving energy and water and how to keep the environment clean.

” We knew all of this already, but now we learned this in more details and we understood the essence of the problem”, a student, member of one of the new Green Clubs formed recently said.

The Green Club students usually have meetings once a week and make plans for their activities during the week. They have made presentations to other students, teachers and school staff about the importance of being environmental friendly and their art creations with environmental messages have been put all over the walls of the school halls and classrooms. Some of the Green Clubs have also made presentations with environmental messages to the nearby community and had cleaning actions outside the schoolyard. Primary School “Blaze Koneski” from Prilep, for example, had a cleaning action  at the local lake. Primary School “Mirce Acev” ,from the Municipality of Gjorce Petrov, which is  part of the pilot phase, has  developed its  activities even further and has  established a system for waste selection.

Schools and local communities benefit from the Green Club activities. Positive changes in energy saving and water pollution are noticed since the clubs have started with their work in these schools. Students’, teachers’ and school staff’s environmental awareness is raised. Greater student involvement in practical activities is expected even more in the future.
