Teachers’ enthusiasm conquers it all!
At 7:30 am, Zivka Stoilkovska is in her classroom, getting the wood burning stove and the classmate PC ready. After the USAID Primary Education Project provided the wireless access points for her classroom, Zivka is able to use the internet in her everyday teaching and learning practice.
“I think it’s great that I can ask the students to look for some information on the web. The kids love exploring and learn a lot quicker by doing so” – says Zivka, a second grade teacher in ‘Ilinden’, a rural school in a village near Kriva Palanka.
In order to help the Government of Macedonia with the initiative in securing computers for every child and modernizing the teaching and learning process, USAID’s Primary Education Project provided 2100 wireless access points for every lower primary classroom in Macedonia. The Ministry for Information Society generously provided staff time to ensure that the access points are installed and properly configured in every lower primary classroom. By joining the projects’ “know how” and the Ministry’s staff, PEP and the Government of Macedonia improved the wireless coverage in the classrooms and ensured that the skills that teachers have gained as a result of the professional development activities organized by the project are put into action. The donation, worth approximately 120 000 USD will help 6771 teachers introduce something new in their everyday practice.
“The students are very excited. Almost all of them have computers at home, and know how to use them. Using a computer during the class activities makes learning a lot more fun. Not to mention that by using the internet, we can get in touch with students from nearby schools and really dwell into the collaboration process”- adds Zivka as the first students enter her classroom.
