Music for better education in Valandovo

As part of the Strengthening the Capacities of School Boards Program, managed by the USAID Primary Education Project in partnership with the “Step by Step” Foundation, in the period between March and June 2011, “Josip Broz Tito” primary school from Valandovo organized series of activities under the slogan “TOGETHER FOR THE CHILDREN”.

Several events took place during that period. The School Board organized a concert of the vocal ensemble “Raspeani valandovcani” and performance by the school orchestra from PS “Straso Pindzur” from village Josifovo. There was an eco-happening where the students presented their projects on environmental protection and a sale of objects manufactured by the students, teachers and parents. There were two plays and an award giving ceremony for the arts and literature competition on the topic “Our school – a healthy environment”. One sport game was also organized. 
All these events drew the attention of the parents, school staff and the local business community.

However, the main event was the Music idol, where after a previous selection of 200 students, only 30 of them entered the finale and performed in front of the audience. They competed in two categories: lower and upper grade students’ category. The jury and the audience selected their favourites. The students Ivana Koceva and Martin Rizov were first-prize winners in the category for lower grade students, while Zorica Belcevska and Pepita Marinkova were selected as first-prize winners in the upper grade students’ category.

Best indicator of the achieved success and interest for this event is the increased number of students who have selected the school subject “Music projects” as an elective subject for the next school year – the number of students is now five times bigger. In addition, the number of students who have chosen to proceed with their formal education in the field of music has significantly gone up, too.

PEP provided financial support for overall replacement of the asbestos roof of the school building with a new plasticized tin roof, while the School Board with the organization of all the abovementioned events, additionally achieved:

“To the School Board and the school staff this event was a chance to gain experience in planning, organizing and lobbying, but at the same time it was an affirmation that we can achieve any idea or goal as long as all interested parties are involved and aquired with the existing problems and needs.’’ stressed out the school director Katerina Guguljanova.

 

Music Idol drew huge interest and attention among citizens of Valandovo and the local media.
