New PEP Film Season started!

On 26th January, PEP revived it’s winter film evenings, showing feature films with educational theme followed by discussions on educational issues. The film shown was the, Oscar-winning “ Mr. Holland’s Opus”. The audience enjoyed the heartwarming tale of the career and family life of a music teacher. The plot followed Mr. Holland's teaching career over a thirty year span. The film featured American history from the 1960s to the 1990s, including the Vietnam War, assassination of John Lennon, and the Watergate scandal. The story also dealt with the issues of attitudes towards deaf children and the cutting of arts programs in public schools across the United States.
The panelists were the famous Macedonian violinist ,Zoran Djorlev; the former ballet dancer, Vladimir Karaev, who is now an activist for the NGO ‘SOS Children’s Village’ (as well as a teacher); and Vesna Dimcevska, the conductress of the children chorus ‘Piccolo’. Apart from their other skills, the panelists are all educators and their true vocation is teaching.
The event took place in the Cinematheque Macedonia. The discussion, on the theme, “What influence can a teacher have on his/her students?” raised great interest among the teachers, municipal education advisors, schools principals and educational experts present. Some of the invitees expressed an interest to borrow the film and to present it again before colleagues and students.
PEP will hold further film evenings during the winter in the Cinematheque Macedonia, Skopje and also plans to show selected films at regional venues during a regional tour in April, 2009.
