Teachers Create Child-Friendly Learning Environments

Within PEP, the Step by Step Foundation, is delivering workshops for lower primary teachers about creating good learning environments, particularly in math and science. “Step by Step” also selected 30 teachers for training as teacher mentors in Math and Science.

“This seminar gave me specific knowledge regarding the most contemporary and effective use of learning centers in elementary classrooms and the concepts of “Project Based Learning”. We discussed and examined both new teaching/learning concepts and training strategies employed in the actual training.” said Agapi Cunkovska, a teacher from “Nikola Karev”- Krusevo, who attended one of these workshops.

In Mirce Acev, primary school, Skopje, the principal Sonja Palcevska organized a seminar in order to present useful tips to her staff on how to create a stimulating environment in the classroom. She used the knowledge and materials obtained during a PEP workshop on the preparation of an effective learning environment as part of PEP’s renovations component.

Elena Apostolova, a teacher from “Mirce Acev” school, said: “These kinds of trainings are very useful because they assist in making the classroom a place where students gladly spend their time. Every new idea and experience exchanging is welcomed by the teachers. This kind of approach contributed with the fact that students do not want to leave the school premises and ask their parents to come to take them from school later then scheduled”.

Suzana Kiradziska, the Director of “Step by Step” said, “We want to emphasize the work going on in primary schools such as: “Zivko Brajkovski”, Skopje, ”Nikola Karev”- Krusevo, “Hristijan Todorovski”, Karpos, Skopje, and “Mirce Acev”- Skopje to create great learning environments.” In these schools, mentors not only conducted seminars for all teachers in lower grades but also organized open classes where, in a practical way, they showed to their colleagues how active methods and project-based learning can be successfully implemented with young children.
