 Green Schools in Action!

Green Club students in PEP’s five pilot ‘Green Schools’ have been busy making sure their schools are contributing to energy efficiency.

Dressed in their Green Club uniforms, students monitor each classroom, meeting room and toilet in their schools to check if water taps work properly; if windows and doors are closed to keep heat in; if the light bulbs used in the schools are energy efficient; if the computers were turned off after use, etc. Together with their teachers, they check the school bills to record the usage of water, electricity and heating oil. They have conducted interviews with their school directors to learn about the relevant policies and organizational practices of the school.

The Green Club students also organized a campaign to raise the awareness of other students and teachers about issues related to energy and water consumption, waste and transportation habits. They made drawings showing how to save energy and water in the school and keep the school clean of waste. They promote waste selection and recycling, and walking and bicycling instead of driving cars. Their best drawings will be used to create posters for the pilot green schools.

Not less active are the Green Schools’ teachers. In March, they will meet again at the fourth Teacher Forum to review the project’s progress and to plan the Green Schools’ contribution in the Earth Day celebration in April, as well as the Green Clubs Quiz in May.

PEP helps other primary schools to replicate the example of the Green Schools. If you are interested to read more about Green Schools, their clubs, actions, competitions and forums, please visit www.greenschools.org.mk.
