"Kiril and Metodij" Primary School from Tetovo
improves teaching by implementing innovative approaches
Satki Ismaili, mathematics teacher at PS Kirili i Metodij, in Tetovo is an innovative participant in USAID/PEP who works in the kind of school that is always open for changes and follows closely innovations which are implemented in the education process.
The school was one of the first to take part in USAID/PEP project and took part in Phase 1 of the component for Improving Mathematics and Science Education. All teachers of Mathematics and Science subject
s in Albanian and Macedonian language in the school passed the trainings. Under the influence of these trainings they made changes in their work using new forms, methods and work techniques, in order to make the teaching more interesting for the students, they started to organize peer-support meetings on a subject-council level more frequently and started to organize lessons monitored by our colleagues. Some of these lessons are recorded with video-camera and kept in the school documentation.
The school is also involved in the component for improving school–based assessment. All teachers passed the training and now they successfully apply the newly-gained knowledge about formative assessments in their work with students.
Last school year, eight teachers from our school successfully passed the PEP certification process and are waiting to take their certificates. In addition to successfully preparing portfolios, some open lessons were monitored by the pedagogue and the director of th
e school.
This school year, based on knowledge gained from PEP seminars, the school has developed priorities and incorporated them in our school annual plan. These include: an action plan for meeting school- based assessment standards, and using student-centered approaches in mathematics and science subjects. Also with the activation of the computers in our school, we are planning to meet more often, discuss and help each otherin the everyday implementation of ICT in our work with students.
The leaders of these activities are the teachers of math and sciences, who were the first ones that worked in the project and some of them are also employed as PEP facilitators.
