Assessment Notebook for Teachers

On 19th December 2007, USAID’s Primary Education Project promoted its “Assessment Notebook” for Macedonia’s teachers during an official reception at the PEP office.

Training of future teachers’ trainers on school – based assessment standards implementation in the schools
The second seminar for training of future teachers’ trainers on school – based assessment standards implementation was held in Bitola from 18th through 20th of November. The training participants were members of the Assessment Working Group, advisors from the Bureau for development of Education and teachers from the first phase school.

USAID and On.net announce the winners of the Student Support Technician Club logo competition
On 19 November 2007, the USAID Primary Education Project, in collaboration with On.net, announced the winners of the Student Support Technician Club (SSTC) logo contest at a special ceremony at Aleksandar Palace. SSTCs have been set up in 164 primary schools in Macedonia to support computer networks, staff computer labs and provide regular computer maintenance.

All of us involved in USAID’s Primary Education Project are stunned by the news of Tose Proeski’s tragic death. While deeply saddened, we feel immensely proud to have been involved with Tose in his humanitarian work and his commitment to a better future for Macedonia’s children.

“IMPLEMENTING SCHOOL-BASED ASSESSMENT STANDARDS”
A seminar on implementing school – based assessment standards was held for future teacher trainers in Skopje, September 5-7, 2007. The participants were members of the Assessment Working Group as well as selected teachers.
The PEP Component: Improving school – based assessment has developed national school – based assessment standards and a code of assessment ethics. The National School – Based Assessment Standards will be implemented during this school year in 10 first phase schools, where training on implementing the standards will be provided for the teachers, school administrators and school directors.

UMD Supports Toshe's Benefit Concert
Based on the understanding of importance of improved education in Macedonia, Academy for Educational Development (AED), United Macedonia Diaspora (UMD), AWARD Entertainment Production and Project for Primary Education (PEP) will work together in joint fundraising activities and campaign aimed at supporting the benefit concert. All collected money will go to primary schools in Macedonia.

PEP’s first training of trainer’s workshop
From 1st to 5th of July the USAID Primary Education Project organized its first training of trainer’s workshop, aimed at improving mathematics and science education. Participating were 70 Macedonian educators (20 for grades 1-4, and 50 for grades 5-8), including representatives from pre-service teacher training institutions, BDE advisors and teachers. The 5 day workshop was led by international consultants with technical support from Indiana University and Step by Step, Macedonia.

On 20 June 2007, the Draft School Based Assessment Standards in Primary Education, developed by the PEP Assessment Working Group were presented to representatives from ten schools selected for implementing the standards during a first phase from September 2007.

USAID/PEP ICT in Education Week
From the 25th-29th of June, the USAID Primary Education Project organized a week of activities with regard to ICT in education. USAID/PEP presented new computer hardware and innovative ICT products for schools. During the week, workshops were organized with international consultants and representatives from INTEL Corporation, OpenLab International and Indiana University.

Workshop on Assessment Standards and Code of Ethics in Assessment
From 25-27 April, a workshop on developing assessment standards in the schools and a code of ethics in assessment was held in Ohrid. The workshop was led by Dr Gerard Shiel from the Educational Research Centre from Dublin and Dr Damian Murchan from the School of Education of the Trinity College in Dublin.

The first Student Support Technician Clubs (SSTC) established.
On April 24th-25th in the Primary School, Vlado Tasevski, the first training for 20 SSTC teachers-mentors was held. The training modules covered network troubleshooting and problem solving in operating systems. The teachers were from 5 schools in Skopje plus one school from Tetovo, Bitola and Kocani. On return to their schools, the trained teachers began to establish student support technician clubs in their respected schools.
The second phase of the training will continue in September when an additional 90 schools will be covered.

Memorandum of Understanding signed between USAID
and the Ministry of Education
18 April 2007
On April 18, in Primary School Vlado Tasevski in Skopje, USAID Primary Education Project (PEP) and the Ministry of Education and Science signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
The aim of the official signing ceremony was to celebrate the agreement on close cooperation between these two institutions and to demonstrate their partnership for improving primary education.

PEP and Microsoft Work Together to Improve Computer Maintenance in Schools
10 April 2007
Microsoft DOOEL, Skopje is donating $10.000 towards PEP’s Student Support Technicians Club (SSTC) program which is training students in primary schools to become support technicians for maintaining computers. On 10th April 2007, PEP Chief of Party Dr. Keith Prenton and Microsoft DOOEL General Manager Ilijanco Gagovski signed an agreement for cooperation.

Tose Proeski and USAID Together for Macedonian Schools
12-29 March 2007
USAID’s new Primary Education Project, a five-year initiative targeted toward all public primary schools in Macedonia, is embarking on a National Information Tour starting on March 12, 2007. The tour will last until March 29and will visit schools and make presentations in eight cities throughout the country: Skopje, Tetovo, Ohrid, Bitola, Kavadarci, Strumica, Kocani and Kumanovo.

PEP Technology Club
27 February 2007
Every two weeks, PEP organizes a Technology Club at the PEP Training Center. Students from a neighboring primary school meet at the training center and try to find practical solutions for given problems. The purpose of this is to trial new technologies with students and to demonstrate problem-based learning, showing how students can be motivated to think creatively, and use critical thinking and logic in problem solving.
