On the 19th of December, in the primary school ‘Hristijan Todorovski Karpos’, USAID PEP and IU consultant Jeff Nowak organized a workshop for the construction of an ‘Environmental Movement Machine’ with the students in 7th and 8th grade. The aim for the students was to construct a chain reaction machine, which will transfer mechanical energy.

117 Primary Schools to Receive Donations from the Tose Fund
Thanks to the ‘Tose Fund’ established with ticket receipts from Tose Proeski’s last concert on 5th October 2007, 116 primary schools will receive kits of equipment worth approximately $1000.
All schools that applied, with the exception of some that have already received equipment from USAID’s PEP project, will receive one of four kits for mathematics, lower primary science, upper primary science and music.

PEP welcomes 123 New Schools
to its Mathematics and Science Component
During March 2008, 123 additional primary schools were selected for involvement in the second phase of the PEP Component ‘Improving Mathematics and Science Education’.
The selection of the schools was made in accordance with agreed criteria (number of mathematics and science teachers, availability and level of equipment in school labs, regional spread and language of instruction).

“USAID introduces ICT to Music Teachers”
March 25th 2008
On March 25th 2008, USAID’s Primary Education Project PEP organized the first ICT in Music Workshop for primary school teachers in Macedonia. The workshop was held in QSI International School, Skopje. 17 music teachers from all over Macedonia attended, including teachers from PEP ICT pilot schools. The workshop was organized in cooperation with the BDE advisor for music education.

Great response from Macedonian firms to USAID School Renovations Project
In 2007, USAID’s Primary Education Project (PEP) renovated eight schools. For Phase Two, all municipalities were given equal opportunity to apply for school renovations funding. 75 municipalities submitted a total of 119 applications, from which 32 were selected.

Mrs Mickovska was invited to speak by the Institute for Education of the Republic of Slovenia.

Students were given a taste of the kind of teaching and learning being promoted by USAID’s Primary Education Project whenconsultants from Indiana University worked with grade eight students in geography and chemistry during seminars and workshops for Phase 1 teachers held in December 2007 and January 2008.

USAID Helps Improve Learning
through Better Assessment
January 2008
During January, 250 teachers participated at the ‘school-based assessment seminars and workshops that took place in hotel “Drim” in Struga. In the workshops, teachers worked in subject specific groups, which gave them more opportunities to directly apply their newly gained knowledge of assessment practice in their respective teaching subjects.

Selected Schools for the Second Phase Renovation
During the second phase of the renovation project, 32 schools from 32 municipalities will be renovated. The selection process was according the selection criteria that USAID/PEP project had developed. The selection was made by the experts from the education area.

Phase Two of PEP School Renovations Kicks Off
28 January 2008
On January 28, 2008 the MOU was signed between PEP and two municipalities, Ilinden and Gazi Baba. On the signing ceremony attended USAID/PEP CoP Keith Prenton, Mayors of these two municipalities Zika Stojanoski and Koce Trajanovski, and principals from the Goce Delcev and Dane Krapcev primary schools.
