Strengthening Capacities of School Boards

School Boards may be real community leaders. Comprised of representatives of different stakeholders, they have legal competences and authorization to govern the school and their decisions may directly affect the quality of teaching process, learning environment and the education process as a whole.

Having in mind the responsible role of the School Boards in the local community and society, within the Renovation Component a new Program on Strengthening the Capacities of School Boards was launched. The intensive training and mentoring sessions should contribute for enhancing and empowering the School Boards to become centers of good school governance. The gained know-how will help the School Boards to introduce higher standards in the school and improve the learning environment. Direct beneficiaries of the improved capacities of the School Boards are the students, current and future, which will have improved physical conditions in the schools, better and high-quality education process and improved learning environment in which they can fully realize their potential.

School Boards have great role in governing the schools and they are aware of the numerous difficulties and the need for renovation of school facilities, so during the application process from November 1 to 15, we received total of 180 applications from 73 municipalities.

On the basis of previously defined selection criteria, the Evaluation Commission comprised of members from different domains assessed the received applications and made a decision to invite 15 School Boards for an interview, in order to select the best 8 School Boards. The interviews were conducted in PEP on November 29 and 30, 2010.

According to the decision of the Evaluation Commission the following 8 School Boards were selected to participate in the Program on Strengthening the Capacities of School Boards:
